Message from Dick Harrington
President & CEO of The Thomson Corporation
Wednesday, September 12, 2001, 2:00 pm EDT I wanted to briefly share with you what we know about our friends and colleagues affected by yesterday's events in New York. With more than 200 Thomson people working in the Twin Towers and more than 2,000 working near the disaster site, our efforts have been focused on confirming the safety of our people.
Through this morning, we have confirmed that the vast majority of our colleagues did get out of the World Trade Center buildings. We are fearful that some did not. We will not rest until we confirm the whereabouts of every Thomson person who works in the area.
It is with great sadness that I report the loss of one of our Thomson colleagues who was on a hijacked flight. We have been in contact with his family and I know you join me in expressing our greatest sympathy.
All our offices in lower Manhattan are closed today. Through the remarkable determination and ingenuity of our colleagues, most of our products, services and systems were up and running at the opening of business today.
Right now, we continue to search for all our people and for answers to the questions we all share. But our efforts going forward will be guided by a few absolute commitments.
We are committed to:
- Accounting for all our people.
- Doing whatever it takes to help them and their families through this ordeal.
- Making arrangements that will allow everyone to return to work as soon as possible.
- Being good business partners to our customers, many of whom also had significant numbers of employees working in the World Trade Center and the surrounding area.
I appreciate your support and your prayers. We will keep you informed as more details take shape.
